CareCom was pleased to attend the HL7 FHIR Connectathon held virtually from September 9-11, 2020. One of our brilliant solution architects, Ryan Short, represented CareCom in the Terminology Services track and brought his knowledge of HealthTerm (CareCom’s terminology management solution), FHIR, and many years of healthcare IT to the FHIR table.
Let’s Talk Terminology
Terminology, and the proper use of it, is not only fundamental for all things in FHIR but is key in all healthcare organizations around the globe. For those of you unfamiliar with ‘terminology service’; a terminology service is one that allows healthcare applications to make use of codes and value sets without having to become experts in the fine details of the value sets and underlying code systems and their related resources. In general, the terminology bucket includes code systems like SNOMED, LOINC, ICD-10CM, other standards, and value sets like COVID-19 specific groupings. The terminology services track focused on the FHIR specification which includes support for the provision of a terminology service. FHIR implementation and how it relates to terminology services and interoperable data exchange is CareCom’s current focus.
